The Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Library, formally known as the Henry J. Cadbury Library, has been an important part of our community since the 1970s, offering valuable resources for Friends and the wider community. It houses a collection of materials, including books by Quaker authors, resources addressing modern and historical issues, and items for spiritual growth and discernment. The library has served PYM as a hub for individuals and monthly meetings seeking to deepen their faith, strengthen their community, and engage in social witness.
While the library is eager to serve borrowers, volunteers are also needed to help sustain this shared resource, which has undergone many changes in library use over the years. There are opportunities for hands-on tasks, including sorting and withdrawing outdated materials, as well as helping with projects that ensure the collection remains relevant and reflective of the diversity of the Quaker experience within PYM. Additionally, Friends with an interest in planning and organizing are invited to assist with committee work, helping to explore ways to expand library access, increase hours of operation, and engage members through displays and book events. Some tasks can be done in the library, while others can be completed from home.
Friends interested in volunteering need no prior library experience, but consistency and a willingness to learn are key. To learn more or connect with the library team, email the PYM library at libraryassistant@pym.org or call 215-241-7220.
