Join us in Pendle Hill’s sanctuary to center down and write in community with other Friends. Enjoy Pendle Hill’s library, art studio, walking trails, and communal meals, with time each evening to come together to worship or share your work as led. Pendle Hill Pamphlets Coordinator Janaki Spickard Keeler will present about the process of writing a Pendle Hill pamphlet and be available to discuss potential pamphlet manuscripts and offer feedback on pamphlet manuscripts in progress.

This sojourn directly precedes the Friends General Conference Gathering (June 30-July 6, 2024), Rooted in Story, at Haverford College near Philadelphia.

Quakers have always been called to be arbiters of peace and truth in times of societal confusion and unrest. And since the beginning, it has been pivotal to the spiritual tradition to be in accountable community while ushering in a more peaceful world.

In this workshop, we will explore the ways that Quakerism has influenced parts of society to embody and champion peace and how individuals, communities, and movements can influence Quakers to continue to evolve our way of thinking and acting to make the journey towards the beloved community a tangible reality.

Using Martin Luther King, Jr.’s work, research, and philosophy, participants can expect to deepen their own understanding and commitment to the peace testimony and explore new ways to live out peace in their homes, meetings, and communities.

Election violence prevention (EVP) is a specific peacebuilding discipline. We know the best practices from international efforts and analysis, but that doesn’t make doing EVP an easy thing. Successful EVP requires a commitment to work with anyone who agrees with the goal of nonviolence, even across enormous political and cultural differences. This lecture will explain how Quaker theology and community have prepared Friends to engage in EVP. We’ll also explore best practices, including specific practices developed by Friends in East Africa, and detail ways in which each person can engage in a manner that is legitimately helpful and authentic to their own spiritual gifts.

Graffiti as Witness: The Art and Activism of a Quaker Pirate

Join Friend Todd Drake as he shares his lifelong journey and witness as a visual artist and social justice activist. Drake’s practice of witnessing and facing life’s great sadnesses with creative practice offers us all another North Star on our own journeys. He will speak to how he has been shaped by this practice, from making art with children in the West Bank to posting graffiti on the streets of New York City. Todd will also share about his exhibit, “Leading in Linocut – The Graffiti Prints of a Quaker Pirate,” currently on display at Pendle Hill.

Rethinking US Policy Toward Israel/Palestine: One Quaker’s Discernment Journey

Since October 7, 2023, much of the Quaker world has spoken out for a ceasefire, release of captives, and the restoration of full humanitarian aid to Gaza. Yet are Friends simply advocating for a return to the status quo before October 7? What about the ongoing concerns over decades of ethnic cleansing, military occupation, illegal settlements, and what international human rights groups have called a system of apartheid against the Palestinians? What about the significant and frequently unconditional US military and diplomatic support for these Israeli policies over many decades? What is a faithful response to various forms of Zionism and Palestinian resistance? How might we address the root causes of the conflict and move toward a future of peace and justice for all in Israel/Palestine?

Speaking from several years of research, reflection, and prayerful discernment, Quaker activist Steve Chase will address the root causes of the conflict and how we might move toward a future of peace and justice for all in Israel/Palestine.
