Foster Friends’ engagement with PYM’s financial health
Recently the Treasurer found joy and fulfillment in the role! Here’s how:
- Worked with the CFO and Admin council to put in place a “Shared Services Agreement,” a legal document allows Arch Street Meeting House Preservation Trust more responsibility for its income and expenses – a big step for the growth of the Trust.
- Worked with Finance Committee and Friends Fiduciary to invest $1,000,000 with the Reinvestment Fund which yields a healthy return while helping local communities have safe housing, quality schools and good healthcare.

- Collaborate with experienced and skilled clerks to care for our entire yearly meeting
Skills or experiences that are needed in a Treasurer include:
- Strong communications skills
- Clerking a committee or meeting
- Thourough understanding of financial accounting for nonprofit organizations
- Knowledge of budgeting
- Basic familiarity with Quaker business practice
- Broad knowledge of, and interest in, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting
- Develop and communicate clear goals and bring them to life
- Familiarity with the intricacies of PYM’s 21st Century history and structure
- Working knowledge of electronic communication systems
The realistic time commitment of a Treasurer includes:
- About 8-12 hours/month attending meetings, communicating with staff and clerks and preparing for meetings
- Attend the following meetings:
- The clerks group, currently twice a month (once in person, once on zoom)
- Council meetings, currently the third Saturday of the month until 1:30PM
- Finance Committee meetings, once per month on zoom
- Terms: Terms are three years, renewable one time
Overview:
The Treasurer plays a leadership role in the financial administration of PYM, advising the yearly meeting on financial strategy and reviewing procedures and financial reporting. This role fosters Friends’ engagement with PYM’s financial health and develops a financial literacy among the council members. The treasurer has the right and duty to bring financial issues to the yearly meeting’s attention, as necessary. The treasurer clerks finance committee and attends meetings of the Clerks Group, Quaker Life Council and Administrative Council on which the treasurer is ex officio.
