Put Thursday July 25th and Friday July 26th on your calendar for two very interesting workshops being offered as part of PYM’s Friends in Fellowship series.
All you need to do is attend PYM’s Annual Sessions at the College of New Jersey, near Trenton. Annual Sessions is free (meals are pay as you go), and you’ll be able to network with Friends from across the yearly meeting, catch up on Quaker connections and news, and participate in a gathering that has been hosted by PYM for 339 years.
We have reached out to two talented teachers, Lee Payton (Chester Meeting), and Shahidah Kalam Id-Dinat, at the William Penn Charter School to give a taste of their American Studies seminar course on United States culture and history as revealed through the lens of race. The teachers recently presented their methodology at the NAIS People of Color Conference in November 2018 in Tennessee. They will share the classroom structures that support and nurture student agency in addressing oppression and foster racial literacy, and talk about what make the class so loved by its students.
Friday’s workshop will educate you about addiction treatment, and provide access to Prevention Point Philadelphia, an important community center that shelters active drug users and meets some of their most pressing human needs, for example: food, clothing and safe place to stay.
You will meet Clayton Ruley, STEP Coordinator, Dr. David Barclay, Medical Director, and Macy Grabowski, attender at Haverford. They will talk about how Prevention Point works, what addition and recovery looks like, and how to support the great work that Prevention Point does in addressing poignant human needs in their Kensington neighborhood.
