Dear
Middle School Friends and families, Welcome
to a brand new year of Middle School Friends(MSF)! Honoring our
traditional September schedule, we're kicking off the year with
the Workcamp gathering - a smaller event at Friends Neighborhood
Guild (FNG) in North Philly. Taking 7 PYM MSFs and 7 FNG students,
the group will gather at the Guild on the evening of Friday, September
19th to start a weekend whose focus is not only on service learning
- but also on appreciating diversity, building a sense of community,
and articulating the Quaker sense of social & humanitarian purpose
that reaches beyond the simple act of service. Co-leading this event
will be Bunmi Samuels, Friends Neighborhood Guild Director of Youth
Programs, and Elizabeth Walmsley, Middle School Friends Coordinator
for Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.
Located at 735 Fairmount
Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19123 and founded by Quakers, the Friends
Neighborhood Guild is a non-profit organization that has been serving
youth and families in the North Philadelphia neighborhood for the
past 125 years. FNG hosts a multitude of programs such as the Community
Food Pantry, Neighborhood Energy Center, various after-school programs,
and the summer Philadelphia Freedom School, to name a few.
During this weekend we will get to know each other and
work on team building, participate in a service project or two in
the local area, have group discussions around the topic of diversity
and community, go out on Saturday night for dinner and a performance,
and possibly attend a local church on the Sunday morning. (Look
for the carpool letter the week before for all the confirmed details.)
Please be sure to bring work clothes that can get dirty for the
service projects, and don't forget to check the "what to bring"
list in the carpool letter.
Registration Deadline:
Thursday, September 11th. (Carpool letter will go out on 9/12.)
