Bargegat Friends Meeting
Barnegat Friends Meeting is a lively congregation of Quakers who gather each Sunday morning for worship in the beautifully preserved Barnegat Friends Meetinghouse on Bay Street just east of the modern shore village of Barnegat, New Jersey. Visitors are always warmly welcomed.
Throughout the year everyone is welcome to join us for worship in our beautiful - but comfortable - old Meetinghouse. We are often led in our worship by principles of Quaker witness - often summed up as "SPICES" - Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship.

.
Barnegat Meetinghouse, built in 1767, is thought to be the oldest building in Barnegat. It is a remarkably preserved example of early wooden venacular Quaker architecture. Door and Siding detail shown here.

At 10 am year round we settle into worship. Quaker worship is held in silence. Each person present silently prays, mediatates, or otherwise waits upon the Divine as each feels is appropriate. Some may feel led to stand and speak to share a thought, recollection, observation, or insight with others who are present. Friends hold that such messages arise from Divine leading..
At 11 o clock, the Friend who has been appointed Head of Meeting for this month will turn and shake hands with the next person, and everyone in the Meetinghouse turns and shakes hands with the person sitting on each side, and Meeting is over. Announcements will be made and visitors made welcome.
After rise of Meeting, Barnegat Friends offer hospitality and serve light refreshments. Members of Meeting will be available to talk with visitors as they also share fellowship with each other. Such gatherings help visitors to get to know Friends, and also build community among Quakers - fellowship helps us know each other, and to share our experiences in the world. |

Barnegat Friends Meeting in the News:
"The Society of Friends, more commonly known as Quakers, has consistently worked to promote peace among nations.
Barnegat Friends Meeting urges the US and all nations to cease building nuclear weapons and to begin nuclear disarmament. Nuclear weapons with their devastating abilities to cause untold civilian misery and death, should be eliminated.
For the sake of humanity, we urge President Clinton, Congress and all nations to begin nuclear disarmament now. Reconsidering and voting for the comprehensive test ban treaty would be an excellent first step."
